Dress Code
While students are all afforded the right to appropriate expression, they also have a right to an education. Although dress is a matter of self-expression and is influenced by weather and fashion trends, certain items and styles are not acceptable for fostering a positive learning environment.
The following items are inappropriate and are not to be brought or worn to school or school-sponsored events:
- Clothing that is overly revealing
- Hats or other head coverings prior to 3:20 p.m.
- Bandanas on heads or around legs, ankles or other body parts or hanging out of pockets
- Clothing with offensive slogans or designs, including anything that promotes drugs, alcohol or is sexually suggestive
- Clothing or jewelry that emulates gang affiliation
- Accessories such as spikes or chains
- Trench coats or dusters (winter jackets should be kept in lockers)
Additionally, shoes must be worn at all times. This list is not meant to be exhaustive. The teacher or administrator will determine the appropriate dress.
Hat and Head Covering Policy
DRHS is a no-hat school. No bandanas are allowed on heads or around legs, ankles or other body parts or hanging out of pockets.
Students wearing a hat or any head covering prior to 3:20 p.m. will be asked to remove it. If a student continually wears a hat or any head covering prior to 3:20 p.m. after being asked to remove it, it will be confiscated and held in the administrative offices.
On the first confiscation, the student may meet with the appropriate administrator after school and retrieve the item. On the second offense, this option is not available and the item can only be retrieved at the end of the semester.
Dress Code Guidance in Jeffco
Responsibility for student dress and appearance generally rests with individual students and their families. Students may wish to express themselves by the manner of their dress and appearance; however, students shall not wear clothing or affect an appearance at school or school-sanctioned activities or events that is disruptive to the educational environment. Jeffco Public Schools standards on student attire are intended to help students focus on schoolwork, reduce discipline problems, and improve school order and safety.
Disciplinary action for violating the student dress code shall include notifying the student of the violation and requiring that the dress or appearance be corrected before the student reenters the classroom, school environment, or school-sanctioned activity or event. At the discretion of the building-level administrator, a family conference may be held. More serious consequences may result from repeated or serious violations.
