Advanced Learning Plan

Advanced Learning Plans at Dakota Ridge High School

Advanced learners in Jeffco Public Schools write one academic and one affective goal each year to help them focus on actualizing their potential.

To make accessing the goals easier for students, teachers and families, our department has moved the ALP goal-setting and monitoring process into SOARS for all grade levels kindergarten through 12th grade. This is the same format as last year. GT resource teachers will be managing the process for schools and students. School staff will be supporting the goals at school.

Students should have received an email in August or September 2023 titled “Initial ALP Questionnaire.” Here, they will learn how to access the student JEDI portal and answer the questionnaire to set their goals. They will then receive another email in January 2024 with additional steps for completing the next ALP survey.

The JEDI portal also includes links to videos to help them understand how to think about their goals, as well as a hyperdoc of suggested goal topics. Students may want to utilize these tools before completing the questionnaire.

Once the goals have been set, parents may find it helpful to encourage their student to log back into the portal every week or so and consider what progress they are making toward the goal. This needn’t be about pressure to perform, but rather about considering focus and forward momentum.

Advanced Learning Plans in Jeffco

The Advanced Learning Plan (ALP) is a legal document outlining programming for identified gifted students and guides educational planning and decision-making. An ALP is developed for every gifted student according to the student’s determined areas of giftedness, interests, and instructional and affective needs. The ALP is created after a student is formally identified as gifted. Learn about GT identification in Jeffco to begin this referral process for a student.

The student's ALP should map out what students hope to learn and accomplish in their area of strength. When students become independent learners and self-advocates they will:

  • Take control of their learning and improve their education.
  • Deepen understanding of their learning style and become strength-based learners.
  • Acquire learning skills that apply to learning situations in life.
  • Will develop a greater sense of their abilities.

Families and students in grades 6-12 may view ALPs in Student Insights.
